Be our QVC pitch-person (guest host) live on QVC television (Watertown)
Reply to: job-aean2-1928768797@craigslist.org
QVC Guest Host Needed
Boston-based company is looking for someone to join our team to help to promote our products on QVC (yes, on live television). While the main function of this position would be representing our products on QVC, there may be additional representation opportunities at other events as well. The company already sells its products successfully on QVC but is looking to hire a new staff-member who would be solely responsible for our on-air segments, promoting our products and the company brand as needed from time to time.
It is not necessary that you have any television experience at all – rather the right fit for this job will be someone outgoing, comfortable, fun, smart and persuasive who understands the QVC system and is excited to be a part of it.
The typical QVC customer is a woman aged 40 to 70. She is a discerning shopper and she prefers to watch (on QVC) and do business with companies who she feels understand and relate to her – especially with regard to the guest hosts on the air.
Tasks would include:
• Complete in-house training to become a “beauty expert” on our products (3 days)
• Complete on-sight training at the QVC West Chester, PA studio to become an approved Guest Host (1 day)
• “On-air guest host” as needed from time to time on QVC (and possibly HSN)
• Possibly representing the company/products at PR events from time to time
Qualifications:
• Personable, outgoing, enthusiastic and confident.
• Experience on television is NOT required (but certainly would not hurt).
• Someone who is familiar with and compatible (in a dialogue) with a typical QVC shopper is preferred but not required.
• Flexible schedule is necessary and commitment to availability is a must (early-retirees may be perfect for this job).
• Excited about the possibility of being on live, national TV and making money selling our fun and exciting products.
Compensation will be flat-rate per QVC appearance in addition to a commission on actual sales performance for each live spot. Travel and expenses to the QVC studio in West Chester, PA will also be 100% compensated.
Please e-mail us if you meet the above qualifications and are interested and excited to be on live television – working with a fun, innovative and successful company. You may send us a resume, but we’d rather that you send us whatever information you feel is relevant to us in making a decision for a new guest host. A picture of yourself would also be very helpful to us in evaluating candidates – but if you are not comfortable initially submitting your picture this is certainly not required and can be taken care of later on in our evaluations.

Misc. Odds and Ends
There are some in the industry who have no consideration and/or appreciation for others. Someone who I gave a few items to and helped with their productions as a volunteer gave away or threw ot a lot of equipment. I was never asked if I wanted any. A long time before, I offered to purchase some when they were going to get rid of their surplus. You know I won’t be helping much in the future.

Misc. Odds and Ends
Do you really need an agent? Few agents get work for their clients and they devote most of their time to clients who they can make the most money from. Their biggest asset is in helping to close a deal that you started. This could also be done by an entertainment attorney who you would probably need anyway. The time spent trying to obtain an agent would be better spent developing a project.

Misc. Odds and Ends
Have you noticed that the pay many production companies are willing to pay seem very low compared to the skill of the worker required? It’s the old supply and demand. When you have a lot of people willing to work for low wages, it brings down the average. Some of the experience and skill required seem ridiculous compared to the wages offered. This usually doesn’t translate to what they charge their clients.

Festivals
Detroit Independent Film Festival
——————————————————————————–
One of the coolest and most filmmaker-friendly festivals has announced their call for entries with a FREE early-bird deadline of September 15th. The Detroit Independent Film Festival will take place March 9-13, 2011. Last year’s inaugural fest featured a pre-premiere screening of George Romero’s “Survival of The Dead” and had Lloyd Kaufman of Troma Entertainment in attendance. But the most stunning aspect of my experience was the connections I got to make with other filmmakers after the screenings. It was great…just a bunch of directors, writers, etc. chatting with each other about the process and the art in the basement gym of an ancient Detroit Public Schools elementary school that has been converted into a theatre to showcase movies made by PEOPLE LIKE US.

The Sky Inside Her Bedroom is a feature motion picture project in the very early stages of development. The story tells of the relationship between a writer and his imagination, physically manifested in the shape of Anna.
In the mold of Being John Malkovich, Science of Sleep and The Nines it is a visually stunning and physically claustrophobic piece that explores the boundaries and texture of imagination and cognition.
We are looking for a talented storyboard artist to help work with the director. This is an opportunity for either a driven artist looking for their first opportunity or an experienced pro who is looking for an exciting and different project. Principal photography will take place in Los Angeles. However, the director is Boston based so we’re looking for a New England based artist.

Misc. Odds and Ends
A good make up artist is very important, especially on big budget movies. We occasionally see pictures of stars without make up, and you wouldn’t want to see many of them in a movie like that unless it was a horror movie. It helps lighting experts and your director of photography. They don’t have to do extra adjustments or change lenses. Sometimes indies can get volunteers of recent graduates of cosmetology schools or maybe someone who is looking for a new career.

Misc. Odds and Ends
Filmmaking is a collaborative process. Even if you could make your film by yourself, you still have to distribute it. If someone else can help or do it for you, it means the more time you can devote to your next project. Every time you have to work on some task you have to sacrifice time in another area.
While you can find many people who will let you volunteer for their project, it is hard to get people willing to work on yours. Usually, there are more actors than parts. However, obtaining people for the production portion of a film is difficult. Some will volunteer, but will never show up when the production is to begin. Always try and obtain extra help because you will find something always comes up or people don’t show up.
The LEF Foundation’s Moving Image Fund deadline for pre-production grants is September 18th. Grants are awarded to documentary filmmakers. Visit http://www.lef-foundation.org/NewEngland/MovingImageFundGrants/tabid/160… for guidelines and more information on how to apply.

Misc. Odds and Ends
Trailers are an art form on their own. There are companies that specialize in them. Many times, you are better off using their services rather than try and do them on your own. One problem is the expense. If you decide to do it yourself, you should see trailers from other movies that have similar content to obtain a feel as to how they should look and play. You want the trailer to briefly indicate to your audience what the movie is about. They should make the audience want to see your movie.

Misc. Odds and Ends
Know your market. Even before you start pre production, you have to know where your film will sell. There are a lot of film festivals and markets throughout the world. Some look for the big budget and large theatrical films. Some look for different genre. Most of the smaller budget films are sold based on trailers and posters. There is a tremendous amount of competition. The price many are offering are extremely low. If you don’t shoot film, you should shoot at least HD. You have to find an angle. For example, there isn’t as many SciFi films in the low budget category. Horror films are over saturated in the market. Sometimes, you will do better in selling different foreign markets compared to the US. Remember to keep money in your budget for marketing/distribution. You might want to share booth with another company. If you use a sales agent, you might want to put a cap on expenses. Do your research. Get paid before send out masters. It could take many months before you see the money.

Technology
You might want to hold off on buying new wireless equipment. There could be pressure for wireless microphone frequency holders to sell out.
HDMI cables could be replaced by HDBaseT. Unlike HDMI, which only transfers uncompressed video and audio data, HDBaseT uses 5Play technology that allows for full uncompressed HD video, audio, 100BaseT Ethernet, and power through a single 328ft CAT5e/6 LAN cable.
YouTube will now support original video all the way up to 4K
Misc. Odds and Ends
Writers need at least 3 scripts in the same genre to get an agent. When you are just starting out, you are better with a small agent. The bigger ones will not devote the time that a smaller one will when you are just beginning. You should submit your best work. Many times you will need to do several rewrites before your work is ready to submit. Getting an agent doesn’t guarantee you anything. If you find someone interested in your script, they can help to complete the deal. Also, it is more impressive to have an agent, and several studios will only take work through an agent.

Los Angeles, CA — Starting its seventeenth year, THE GUY HANKS & MARVIN MILLER SCREENWRITING PROGRAM aka The Cosby Program, will be accepting applications from July 15th to September 15, 2010. This program was established by Drs. Bill and Camille Cosby at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. Unaffiliated with USC, the goal of the Hanks-Miller Program is to develop the pool of qualified African-American writers in the entertainment industry.
This program meets twice a week in the evenings for 15-weeks beginning February, 2011. It is designed to assist writers in completing a television or feature script, while giving them the opportunity to examine African-American history, culture and iconography. Tuition is free to those selected.
Our program is not designed for beginning-level writers. We are seeking writers who have taken the initiative to study television or feature writing through workshops or classes; though a degree in cinematic writing or filmmaking is not required. In an industry that is extremely competitive, we have found our greatest success in assisting those who have a strong foundation in television or screen writing and have a body of work and training to show for their efforts. Writers selected for this program usually have no produced credits, but are on the brink of great success. They are able to use the product and the relationships they create in this unique workshop environment to advance their careers. The Hanks-Miller Program is credited with introducing more successful African-American writers into the entertainment industry than any other program of its type.
Our alumni are highly respected and sought after. They are a primary recruiting source for the Disney Writing Fellowship, the Fox Diversity Program, the CBS Television Program, the Nickelodeon Writers’ Program and the Warner Brothers Comedy and Drama Writing Program. Our alumni are represented by top agencies including UTA, William Morris, ICM , APA and CAA, to name a few.
Although obtaining employment is not the primary goal of the program, alumni have used relationships and scripts developed in the program to secure positions as television and feature writers, producers, directors and executives. Our writers have created, written and produced for top ten shows on televisions, as well as news and reality television shows. They have also completed countless freelance assignments. Some of the shows our writers have recently written on or have been staffed on include: “Private Practice,” “Cougar Town,” “Criminal Minds,” “Lincoln Heights,” “Ghost Whisperer,” “Saving Grace,” “Bones,” “Brothers,” “House of Payne” and Sons of Anarchy. Our Feature writers have not only been produced, but have received honors through “Tribeca All Access,” “Hollywood Black Film Festival,” “Austin Film Festival” and “Fade In Magazine.” They have also completed independent features and short films as well.
Our writers have been recognized by organizations including the NAACP; while the Program itself has been recognized by the California Governor’s office, a State Senator and the Los Angeles Mayor’s office.
We invite you to apply or re-apply to our program. We are always seeking writers with talent and a drive for success.

Looking for videographer (Boston)
Reply to: gigs-4pdd8-1821794578@craigslist.org
I’m trying to market a new product and looking for someone to make a short promo for me. It would consist of the showing the product being used as well as a few interviews that I’ve set up of people talking about it. I’m trying to keep my budget as low as possible as I’m still trying to market this. So this project may not be ideal for a professional.
This is just for one edited video 3 – 5 mins. Should consist of one day shooting the product and another day doing interviews for half the day. There may be a possibility of doing the whole thing in the same day also.
If it goes well there may be work in the future and I’d be happy to pass your name along to others as I meet other entrepreneurs all the time.
Please respond back with costs, and sample of work. Thank you.

Technology
MIT researchers have developed technology that they claim will make the Internet 100 to 1,000 times faster. One of the big problems is the initial expense to convert.
Adobe stated that Audition, the audio application for recording, mixing, editing and mastering, will be coming to the Mac in a future release.
Misc. Odds and Ends
With the heat we have been having, it might be a good time to measure something about temperature and equipment. Heat can do a number on your equipment. While we don’t need to keep our computers in cold rooms like we did for the mainframes, you don’t want to leave them lying out in the sun. This is true of a lot of equipment such as cameras. Lubricants can dry and repair bills are expensive. As computers get older, fans can be more susceptible to failure. High humidity could cause steam and vapors to appear on the inside of camera lenses. In extreme cases, plastic can melt. Cold can cause additional problems. You may need to let some equipment slowly adapt in the environment before you use it.

Technology

For those lucky enough to use the new RED camera, most people recommend recording sound separately and not directly to the camera.

Misc. Odds and Ends

Buy now or wait is a big question. Most electronic related items improve in quality and decrease in price the longer you wait. Can you wait or do you need it now? Most of us do not have plenty of money so we have to decide how and when to spend it. If you have a contract with an employer who will help pay for the item, and you can justify it by increased speed and production, then you should probably get it. Does new software require an upgrade? Is it a nice to have, but not necessary? Are you just starting out, and is experience more important than quality? When will you use these items? All these are questions you have to ask.

Technology

With the prediction of solar activity, it could have an affect on wireless communication. This could affect wireless mikes to your internet connection. Better to be prepared and have nothing happen, than not to have any contingency plan.

Misc. Odds and Ends

After helping in film a production of a seminar where one speaker talked for 3 hours, I decided that it is almost impossible not to be boring. The speaker was animated, had some exercises and asked questions. Can any one subject be that inspiring for that long a period? This is the age of Twitter and instant messages. Our attention span is getting shorter. PowerPoint doesn’t cut it.

Even great comedians don’t usually try to have one man shows running more than 90 minutes. Movies run shorter now than many years ago, but part of it is for financial reasons. With a movie, you can do a lot of quick cuts and also have a lot of variety to make time seem to go quicker.
