Why did we fail?

Maybe some of the answers will help other organizations. We tried to do too many things for too many people. We couldn’t find what most people were most interested in. It wasn’t for lack of trying. People did not reply to requests of what they wanted.

There was lack of support from the community and other organizations.

We didn’t have enough commitment from most officers and directors. Film North was a volunteer organization. Nobody was paid and it costs money to do things that came out of our pocket. I know the lack of timely response was frustrating to me. You shouldn’t volunteer unless you will do the job.

There will be a free screening of the moving documentary “Bullied” on Thursday the 20th at 7:30pm. The film chronicles one student’s ordeal at the hands of anti-gay bullies and offers an inspiring message of hope to those fighting harassment today. Donations are voluntary, and benefit NAGLY (the North Shore Alliance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Youth).

It’s a fantastic opportunity to get your work broadcast to a wider audience and Aesthetica are keen to see entries from both new and established filmmakers who are driving short film forward. Call-for-entry FEST – International Film Festival
The festival will take place from the 26th of June to the 3rd of July 2011, in Espinho, Portugal and is organized by FEST-Associação Cultural, a registered NGO focused on audiovisual education and promotion. .
FEST is already going on its 7th edition, celebrating its continuous rise and development. The event is focused on creating a space for young filmmakers, up to the age of 30, to show and promote their work. It is divided in several categories.
First there is a short film competition for fiction, documentary, academic work, experimental and animation, as well as a special prize for local productions.

Secondly, there is the main prize, Castelo de Prata, for directors on their first or second long feature.

Altogether the festival has an unquestionable thirst for new visions and perspectives of cinema, concentrating on the creators of tomorrow, with an important direct connection with the past.

Following five years of carefully selected art exhibits, the Mayyim Hayyim Gallery is offering the chance to explore the power of water through film.
Submit your short film (10 minutes or less) or invite your students or colleagues to participate in this new contest exploring the universal power of water as a source of renewal. The theme Everything Begins in the Water is open to broad interpretation. Films of Jewish content are warmly welcomed, but not required.

2011 Five-Minute Student Film Contest
Massachusetts high school filmmakers enjoy the opportunity to show the world what you’ve got by entering the 2011 Five-Minute Student Film Contest. The competition, entering its third year, is sponsored by Film North, CinemaSalem, and the Salem Film Fest in order to encourage excellence and conversation among emerging filmmakers.
Entrants can win cash prizes, and will have the opportunity to see their work on the big screen when the top ten films will be presented at CinemaSalem on Thursday, March 3, 2011, on the eve of the Salem Film Fest.
The contest is filmmaker-friendly, since there is no entry fee and the submission process is quick and easy. Entries must be received by the submission deadline, January 28, 2011.
There are a few simple rules:
Entries must be produced by high school students, either individuals or groups
Competition is limited to new work, produced during the years 2010 or 2011
Entries must be five minutes or shorter in duration
All genres and topics are welcome
The top 10 films will be screened on Thursday, March 3, 2011
Cash prizes of $100, $50, and $25 will be awarded to the top three films
Entries must be submitted on DVD (one entry per DVD)
Entries must be accompanied by an entry form including:
name of filmmaker(s)
contact information, including email and telephone number
name of high school or arts organization
title of film
length
a short synopsis
No unauthorized use of copyrighted images or music is allowed
Submission deadline is January 28, 2011. There is no entry fee!

The 2010 Cape Ann Film Festival kicks off on Thursday, September 30 with a special preview party at The Cape Ann Community Cinema at 21 Main Street in Gloucester. Doors open at 6:30pm. The eclectic local instrumental rock band The Weisstronauts will take the stage at 7:00pm. A Festival trailer round-up will kick off at 8:00pm. Pizza from new West End neighbors Giuseppe's will be served, as will beer and wine. This is a free event, and a $10.00 suggested donation will be thanked with a ticket to any regular CACC Festival film. The Festival runs October 1-17 at the CACC and Rockport Music Cinema at the Shalin Liu Performance Center at 37 Main Street in Rockport.

The Williamstown Film Festival was founded in 1998 to fill a cultural gap in a part of Massachusetts known for its world-class museums, theater, music, and dance - the Berkshires. Because film seemed the missing link in an artistically rich region, some two dozen local residents and graduates of Williams College felt strongly that a film festival could bridge the gap. After many meetings, the Williamstown Film Festival was incorporated as a non-profit organization and began planning. The goal was tripartite: (a) to honor America’s film past in the shape of classics, (b) celebrate the present day through panels, seminars, and q-and-a’s between audiences and the actors, writers, directors and producers of indie film, and (c) explore the new technologies which are carrying the art of film into the 21st century.

Misc. Odds and Ends

For many, we work in a make believe world. From the ads I see, many people carry this over to the real world. We would all like to hit the lottery, but not that many are going to do it. Many advertise no pay positions looking for Red cameras, top of the line equipment, and many years of experience. There are some who do occasional free work, but the amount of these people seem to be getting less while the requests are increasing. Professionals have to earn a living to pay for their equipment and other bills. To make things worse, many of these requestors treat those who volunteer poorly. Going to a shoot and waiting while others get organized or having a shoot canceled while you are waiting is not uncommon.

Boston-based company is looking for someone to join our team to help to promote our products on QVC (yes, on live television). From August 24th to the 29th, the Monterey Bay Aquarium will host the Blue Ocean Film Festival. The film festival is being presented in tandem with an ocean conservation summit. Over five days, 118 films will be shown at five different venues (You can find the films listed here by day and time of showing http://www.blueoceanfilmfestival.org/ticketspasses/filmtickets.html). Awards for the best films will be given Saturday at the Golden State Theater in Monterey.

Do you really need an agent? Few agents get work for their clients and they devote most of their time to clients who they can make the most money from. Their biggest asset is in helping to close a deal that you started. This could also be done by an entertainment attorney who you would probably need anyway. The time spent trying to obtain an agent would be better spent developing a project.

Have you noticed that the pay many production companies are willing to pay seem very low compared to the skill of the worker required? It’s the old supply and demand. When you have a lot of people willing to work for low wages, it brings down the average. Some of the experience and skill required seem ridiculous compared to the wages offered. This usually doesn’t translate to what they charge their clients.

One of the coolest and most filmmaker-friendly festivals has announced their call for entries with a FREE early-bird deadline of September 15th. The Detroit Independent Film Festival will take place March 9-13, 2011. Last year’s inaugural fest featured a pre-premiere screening of George Romero’s “Survival of The Dead” and had Lloyd Kaufman of Troma Entertainment in attendance. But the most stunning aspect of my experience was the connections I got to make with other filmmakers after the screenings. It was great…just a bunch of directors, writers, etc. chatting with each other about the process and the art in the basement gym of an ancient Detroit Public Schools elementary school that has been converted into a theatre to showcase movies made by PEOPLE LIKE US.

This position serves as Audio Recording Supervisor/Engineer for Student Projects and Emerson Productions. Supervision of all audio suites (both 7th and 8th floors); provide training in numerous software and hardware programs; answer questions that arise and resolve all technical difficulties; perform any and all duties related to the smooth operation of audio facilities. Manage the Audio Technical Specialist (full-time employee) and 8-12 student workers. Hire and manage a temp mix engineer during peak season. Perform as liaison to the VMA audio faculty regarding the VMA Audio Program. Perform as liaison to the VMA film faculty regarding the Advanced Student Projects. Interact with other departments to address and solve problems related to our student needs. Continue one on one interaction with students to assist in the completion of projects.

Responsibilities:
• Serve as primary Audio Engineer, Sound Designer and Mixer for Student Projects and Emerson Projects.
• Monitor student lab assistant’s hours, assign lab assistants to assist users according to user needs and assistant’s skill. Interview, hire, train, schedule, fill open shifts when necessary. Prepare and offer workshops for lab assistants on new and/or improved software capabilities.
• Supervise Audio Technical Specialist; hire Temporary Audio Mixer during peak seasonal periods. Interview, hire, train, schedule, fill open shifts when necessary. Conduct meetings with staff members to review goals and discuss performance.
• Meet with staff, faculty and students on a regular basis to determine their needs to assess the operation and performance of the facility. Train staff and faculty on the use of equipment.
• Work with manager to set both Annual and Quarterly team goals. Track metrics of the utilization and customer service feedback on the Audio Post Production Labs.
• Work one on one with students. Organize and schedule all sound mixes for beginning to advanced projects (to be completed by self, Freelance Audio Mixer and Student Studio Pilots) while coordinating with the Editorial Post Production Supervisor.
• Close interaction and meetings with VMA faculty to plan future developments within Post Production Audio facilities, as well as, workflow ideas due to the consistent course increases. Conduct research of emerging technologies and analog/digital possibilities in Post Production. Required Qualifications:
Extensive ProTools software and hardware experience. MFA highly desirable, BA plus other professional experience. Sound design, mixing and recording skills. Able to meet very tight deadlines, very good communications and social skills, as well as skills in managing other workers and teams.
5+ years working on Audio equipment (mixers, recorders, microphones, outboard rack gear, compressors, etc…) 3+ years working with DAW software like, Pro Tools, Digital Performer, Ableton Live.
5+ years of computer hardware and software trouble shooting experience (replacing Hard Drives, Memory, Power Supplies, PCI Cards, create builds for workstations).

Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with Audio Engineering for both film and video, basic management skills in scheduling, hiring, written communication and planning desirable.

Filmmaking is a collaborative process. Even if you could make your film by yourself, you still have to distribute it. If someone else can help or do it for you, it means the more time you can devote to your next project. Every time you have to work on some task you have to sacrifice time in another area.
While you can find many people who will let you volunteer for their project, it is hard to get people willing to work on yours. Usually, there are more actors than parts. However, obtaining people for the production portion of a film is difficult. Some will volunteer, but will never show up when the production is to begin. Always try and obtain extra help because you will find something always comes up or people don’t show up.

Know your market. Even before you start pre production, you have to know where your film will sell. There are a lot of film festivals and markets throughout the world. Some look for the big budget and large theatrical films. Some look for different genre. Most of the smaller budget films are sold based on trailers and posters. There is a tremendous amount of competition. The price many are offering are extremely low. If you don’t shoot film, you should shoot at least HD. You have to find an angle. For example, there isn’t as many SciFi films in the low budget category. Horror films are over saturated in the market. Sometimes, you will do better in selling different foreign markets compared to the US. Remember to keep money in your budget for marketing/distribution. You might want to share booth with another company. If you use a sales agent, you might want to put a cap on expenses. Do your research. Get paid before send out masters. It could take many months before you see the money.

In search of a DP with Canon 7D to shoot some day and night exterior tests for upcoming Music Video. Would like to also shoot a day-for-night test, and various speeds/frame rates. If you have Magic Bullet knowledge that is a plus as the day-for-night will have to be played with. Could lead to work as DP for the actual Music Video for an edgy up-and-coming hip-hop group out of Boston.

You might want to hold off on buying new wireless equipment. There could be pressure for wireless microphone frequency holders to sell out.

Misc. Odds and Ends

Writers need at least 3 scripts in the same genre to get an agent. When you are just starting out, you are better with a small agent. The bigger ones will not devote the time that a smaller one will when you are just beginning. You should submit your best work. Many times you will need to do several rewrites before your work is ready to submit. Getting an agent doesn’t guarantee you anything. If you find someone interested in your script, they can help to complete the deal. Also, it is more impressive to have an agent, and several studios will only take work through an agent.

Talamas July Workshop Series: Best Practices in Lighting
New England’s leading audio and video equipment provider, Talamas Broadcast Equipment, will host a series of three full-day workshops for lighting directors, cinematographers and other film and TV production professionals on how to use the latest lighting techniques and equipment to produce superior cinematic results in a motion picture.

The complimentary workshops will be held from 9am to 4pm on three Saturdays –July 17 , July 24, and July 31 – and can be attended as a complete series (recommended) or as individual workshops. All workshops will take place at Talamas’ main facility at 145 California Street in Newton. Complimentary light lunch and beverages will be provided.
Leading the workshops will be lighting designer and gaffer Guy Holt, owner of ScreenLighting & Grip of Dedham, Mass. Holt has served as a lighting director, gaffer, set electrician and generator operator on numerous feature films, commercials and television productions. He is a skilled and experienced presenter on the topics of harmonics, power generation and basic to advanced lighting techniques.
