Demystifying Lighting [In-Person]

Starts July 26

1 session: Tuesday, July 26, 7-9:30pm

Does lighting confuse you? Does it intimidate you? Are you over-reliant on a handful of lighting setups, but when you attempt something new you get mixed results? Would you like to look at an image and have a really good idea on how it was lit?

This workshop explores how light behaves in a completely predictable and controllable way. Light is often seen as this mysterious and complicated “thing,” when in reality it is deceptively easy to understand – it just takes thoughtful teaching that demonstrates the principles from a multitude of angles. There should be some solid “aha” moments along this journey.

This workshop is not about where to place lights or how to light a subject. It is focused on a deep understanding of how light behaves so that we can work with it as deliberately as any fully understood tool in our toolkit. It will not be a dry, scientific workshop, but rather practical and instinctual, breaking down concepts into easy-to-understand pieces. We’ll also explore the creative implications of lighting and how these choices affect our work.

This workshop is for any imagemaker: photographer, cinematographer, director, illustrator, painter, CGI artist, graphic designer, art director, etc. of any skill level, from beginner to working professional. You’ll leave with a changed perspective, and every lighting decision you make going forward should be affected. Learning HOW to light (the creative mastery) is a lifelong journey, and this will lay the foundation to make that fully possible and accelerate your growth.

Note: At the request of the instructor, participants are required to wear N95, KN95, or KN94 masks.

Tuition: $75 regular | $60 member | $50 low-income

Kevin Kamin is a director, colorist, photographer and CGI/VFX artist. All his commercial work is reliant on a deep understanding of light. Work samples can be viewed at studiogata.com/filmnorth.
