Film Scoring 101 [In-Person]

Starts November 6

1 session: Saturday, November 6, 9am-12pm

Learn how the art of film scoring advances the story cohesiveness between dialogue, observed behavior, sound design, and music, resulting in an enhanced viewer experience.

Directors have a story to tell, and an effective film score can help them to tell that story by supporting dialogue, observed behavior, and sound design by way of musical cues throughout the story. These cues can add an emotional cohesiveness to the story, foreshadow events, emphasize important moments, reinforce a character or location through theme (leitmotif) assignment, and establish environments (set the stage). Being a non-verbal partner in telling the story process, music can subtly enhance an actor’s performance as well, including the delivery of lines, pacing, and even voice inflection by way of choices in melody, chord, tempo, and instrument selection.

In addition to the above, our discussion will include:

  • Frequency Sharing (20 Hz – 20,000 Hz)
  • Why Music is the Last Story Telling Element to be Added to a Film
  • Spotting Sessions with In and Out Points (including audio ring out)
  • Desired Emotion(s) in a Scene – the class will come up with their favorite list
  • Tempo Map Building
  • Film Scoring Examples from Academy Award Winners for Best Score
  • Temp (temporary) Music
  • Selecting Your Band

This workshop has been developed for both filmmakers and film score composers of all levels.
