Introduction to Digital Photography [In-Person]

Starts January 25

4 sessions: Tuesdays, January 25-February 15, 6:30-9:30pm

Do you have a DSLR or mirrorless camera that you bought with the intention of using for family photos or to document your travels, but never got around to learning how to use it? This four-week course is designed to teach students the basics of digital photography. Confusing terms like aperture, depth of field, and exposure will be presented and explained so students will gain a basic understanding of them and how to apply their knowledge to taking photos.

Weekly assignments will be given and are designed to help students learn the basic concepts and techniques of photography.

Course Outline

Week One: Focusing and composition

Week Two: Exposure

Week Three: Depth of field and shutter speed

Week Four: Flash photography

Course Requirements

  • Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) or mirrorless camera and at least one lens required. Flash is optional (flash techniques will be discussed in the final class). Students are encouraged to bring their cameras (and camera manuals) to class so they can have specific questions about their gear answered.
  • Students must print one 8×10 print for class critique, as well as a contact sheet of images taken for each assignment (details will be discussed during the first class).

NOTE: this in-person course is held at FilmNorth, 550 Vandalia Street, Suite 120, Saint Paul, MN 55114. FilmNorth currently requires proof of full vaccination (initial shots + booster) for all in-person classes and events or a negative PCR Covid test result (required for every class session) within 48 hours of the class/event.
