FilmNorth is the local host for both ShortsLab St. Paul and the Film Forward touring program–all part of Sundance Institute’s recently expanded efforts to connect with independent artists and audiences in regions across the country.

Film Forward will travel to Minnesota for the very first time with filmmakers Lacey Schwartz (director, Little White Lie) and Mehret Mandefro (producer, Difret). In partnership with FilmNorth, FilmForward will visit St. Paul, Minneapolis and Northfield bringing freescreenings, moderated discussions, feedback sessions for emergingfilmmakers, and a local filmmaker reception.

Little White Lie is a personal documentary that explores thedirector’s discovery of family secrets, denial, and the power oftelling the truth. The film follows Lacey Schwartz’s journey toconfront her family secrets in order to come to terms with her dualidentity of being Black and Jewish. Difret explores the conflicts thatarise when traditions passed down for generations are interrupted.Hirut, a 14-year old Ethiopian girl, is facing the death penalty forkilling her would-be husband in her rural village when an empowered and tenacious young lawyer arrives from the city to represent her.
