FilmNorth collaborates with area schools to offer in-school filmmaking residencies. Our in-school residencies bring digital storytelling and filmmaking tools to the classroom.
Partnering with teachers, FilmNorth Youth Programs staff and teaching artists focus on ways to infuse educational curriculum with creative expression. Residency curriculum is designed to be adaptable to fit the needs and interests of each class. Generally, students work in small groups to create short films that address a topic they are learning about in class, document a project a class or school is working on, explore a social issue affecting their community, or a personal story. Promotional video for Jennings Community School. This video was created as part of an in-school residency with students at Jennings Community School in the Spring of 2019.
“How to Make Briyani”. Abdimahad shares his story about being sick one day and to feel better, his sister made briyani. Created with students at Wellstone International High School in the Fall of 2016.
“Zombie Flute” was created as part of a filmmaking residency at Avalon School in St Paul, in collaboration with both FilmNorth and the MN Opera. As part of the residency, a class of middle school students studied Mozart’s Magic Flute, storytelling and the hero’s journey as well as filmmaking and film genres—then created their own films, inspired by Mozart’s opera. All the films premiered at the Ordway as part of the MN Opera opening of it’s production of The Magic Flute in the Spring of 2014
