Screenwriting Boot Camp

Learn the nuts and bolts of screenwriting! Part of each day will be devoted to watching and discussing portions of great films that have a lot to teach about structure and what it means to write memorable and compelling stories for the screen. We’ll also spend time sharing our own freshly-written script pages with one another. We’ll have lots of fun, and by the end of the week, you’ll know the basics of screenwriting and lots about film and television. Best of all, you’ll complete a script for a short film!

Digital Photography Camp

Learn how to make the most of your manual digital SLR camera to make excellent photographs and expand your creative vision! We’ll shoot at interesting urban locations around IFP, and also in a studio lit environment. You’ll learn how to sort through and catalog your photograph collection in Adobe Lightroom and how to use basic Photoshop techniques to complete your artistic vision. Objectives include learning manual settings, framing shots in-camera utilizing compositional elements like lines, angle and symmetry, gaining an awareness of lighting effects, and basic photo editing skills. Please bring a DSLR camera with manual settings each day with a minimum 4GB memory card and charged battery, and at least one lens.

Fashion Photography Camp

Max. enrollment: 12 students, for ages 12–17
Learn how to plan and produce a fashion shoot! For inspiration we’ll look at the work of classic and current fashion photographers such as Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Ellen von Unwirth, Cass Bird, and Irving Penn. We’ll meet with local fashion designers to discuss their work, and then we’ll plan the location, lighting, and overall mood for a shoot that will highlight their designs worn by professional models. Objectives include developing clear communication skills, idea execution, pre-production planning, artistic direction of your model, and creating a small portfolio of the shoot. This outrageously fun and educational camp is made possible with support from the Minnesota Textile Center.

Short Cuts Camp

Max. enrollment: 12 students each section, for ages 11–15
The perfect camp for the future director! Students will create two short films over the course of the week. You’ll be introduced to the filmmaking process through an introductory artist’s statement film, then add further production value in creating video poem shorts. You’ll learn how to develop and storyboard a film idea, direct a production with professional gear, and edit with Adobe Premiere Pro CC.

Documentary Camp

Be part of a documentary film team! Working with a topic determined by the instructor, students will learn the entire process of documentary filmmaking, from pre-production to distribution. Production days (Tuesday & Wednesday) will be on location (TBD). Other sessions will be held at IFP.

Narrative Filmmaking Camp

This class is designed for those interested in learning about the process of fictional storytelling through digital filmmaking. Over the course of the week, students are introduced to visual storytelling, cinematography, sound, and lighting techniques. Students then collaborate to create an original short film using professional gear and Adobe Premiere Pro CC editing software.

The Art of the Music Video
Instructors: Deacon Warner & Maxwell Becker

Students will team up with Northern Outpost Media, a local music video production team, to create an original music video for a local band. Along the way, you’ll learn about the history of music videos and gain a greater understanding of the genre’s larger impact on contemporary filmmaking.

Stop Motion Animation Camp

Animation is not only fun to watch, it’s fun to make! With stop motion animation, everything around you can come alive! In this camp we’ll explore the basics of animation and work together and in small groups to develop stories, build props and characters, animate them, create soundtracks, and present to the world the amazing things we can do through the powers of stop motion.

Flash Animation & Photoshop Camp

Flat is where it’s at! This camp takes you on a journey into the colorfully wonderful—and also flat—world of two-dimensional animation. You’ll learn how to use professional software to create both simple and complex animated movies. You’ll design and rig your own animated characters so they can interact with the worlds and story you create from your imagination.

CAMP INSTRUCTORS
John Akre practices, studies, and lives animation. He is working on his third animated feature and has made over 70 animated shorts using a wide variety of animation techniques. His films have won several awards and have shown around the world at venues that include the Louvre Museum in Paris. John features his work on his website www.sloppyfilms.net.
Maxwell Becker is IFP’s Operations Manger, a filmmaker and musician. He—along with fellow Minneapolis College of Art and Design graduates Kevin Russell and Joe Clark—founded Northern Outpost Media, a Minneapolis based production company that specializes in uniquely organic music videos. The company began in 2008 and produced over 20 episodes of an online web series that focused on the local music scene by showcasing bands and musicians in a live studio environment. A year later, Northern Outpost began producing distinctive music videos that premiered on MTV, The Fuse Network, Pitchfork, Stereogum, and Paste Magazine.
Stephanie Colgan is currently finishing an MFA degree in photography from the International Center of Photography and Bard College in New York. She has worked an an editorial photographer for many years and will soon be photographing the runway shows of New York Fashion Week for The New York Times. She loves the music on Radio K, movies like Moonrise Kingdom, books about art and fashion, and playing games with her family.
David Grant is a Twin Cities-based screenwriter and playwright. As a playwright, he has been commissioned to write new work for the Minnesota Science Museum, the Minnesota Historical Society, Mixed Blood Theater, VocalEssence, The Playwrights’ Center, and Great American History Theatre. As a screenwriter, he has written drama for Twin Cities Public Television, Russell Simmons’ Def Pictures, HBO New York, Davis Entertainment, and the Showtime Network. Grant has been a recipient of screenwriting fellowships from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the McKnight Foundation.
Allison Herrera has a broad background in youth media. She has served as FilmNorth’s Youth Program Director and taught youth workshops for Saint Paul Neighborhood Network and Intermedia Arts. Allison is also a reporter and producer for AMPERS, an association of 15 independent community radio stations in Minnesota, and a freelance video producer.
Deacon Warner is the Youth Program Director for FilmNorth. During the school year he teaches documentary video production through in-school residencies as well as an after school video production program housed at FilmNorth. His students’ work has been accepted into many festivals and screenings and won numerous awards, including a 2008 Award of Excellence from the Minneapolis School Board and the Special Focus Award at the 2010 Minnesota Historical Society’s 1968 Project Film Competition. Deacon is currently working on a feature-length documentary about the history of the food coop movement in the Twin Cities.
Yoshi Katagiri has been working in the film and television industry for over ten years. He began by volunteering in the equipment room at IFP and thereupon studied Filmmaking and Media Production at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. He has worked as a grip on feature films, edited award-winning narrative shorts and cable programming, and is currently a director/shooter of corporate marketing videos.
