Prepare for an immersive exploration into the world of animation! Stop Motion Camp participants will learn the essentials of stop-motion animation while exploring each phase of the process – from storyboarding to image capture using Stop Motion Studio and final editing in Adobe Premiere. Participants will collaborate in pairs, refining skills in story development, character design, camera techniques, lighting, sound design, and frame-by-frame motion. Using uniquely designed paper or clay characters, each participant will leave with a collection of animated short films.
Preparation: Bring a phone, phone charger that can connect to an iMac, and have the free app Stop Motion Studio downloaded before you arrive on the first day. Link to the app for Apple and Android. Please email if you need assistance with installing the app. Construction paper, scissors, glue, pencils, markers, and some clay will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring any other materials that could be of interest in the creation of the animation.

Emily Downes
Emily Downes is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Film, Video, Animation, and New Genres at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she received both her BFA and MFA in Film and Animation. Emily is also an interdisciplinary artist, creating works using mostly video, photography, animation, puppetry, and music. She is most passionate about sharing her talents for media arts with all ages while collaborating with local artists to build a strong and vibrant community. Emily is driven to providing youth and young adults the necessary tools to enact change in their communities through the power of digital storytelling, and has initiated the inclusion of digital storytelling into classroom curriculums both abroad in Spain as well as in Milwaukee, WI and Saint Paul, MN high schools.
Emily has made several experimental short videos, documentaries, and animations, which have showcased at film festivals and galleries worldwide, including The Short Film Corner at the Cannes Film Festival, the Milwaukee Film Festival, Minneapolis Underground Film Festival, the Grim Natwick Animation Film Festival, Chicago International REEL Shorts Film Festival, and Demolden Art Gallery in Santander, Spain.
Class Registration Guidelines & Cancellation Policy
- Space is assigned on a first-come basis. Registrations must include payment in full. Registrations are accepted after registration deadlines if space is available.
- If minimum enrollment has not been reached by 7 days prior to the start date of a camp, FilmNorth may cancel it, in which case registrants will immediately be notified and receive a full refund within 5 business days. A check will be issued for registrations that were paid by cash. In lieu of a refund, students have the option of applying their tuition to another camp if scheduled in the same calendar year.
- For those wishing to cancel a registration at least 7 days prior to the first camp session, 100% of the tuition will be refunded minus a $25 administrative fee. For registration cancellations received less than 7 days prior to the first camp session, 50% of the tuition will be refunded minus a $25 administrative fee. As of a camp start date, no refunds or credits/exchanges will be given.
- Tuition is not prorated for missed camp sessions.
- The FILMNORTH CAMP PARENT/GUARDIAN RELEASE FORM and FILMNORTH CAMP APPEARANCE RELEASE FORM must be completed and submitted prior to the start of the first camp session. A new set of forms must be completed for each camp. Please print, complete and return the two PDF forms below by: 1) emailing them to the Director of Engagement and Advancement; or 2) mailing them via regular postal delivery to Summer Camps, c/o FilmNorth, 2441 University Ave W, Suite 100, Saint Paul, MN 55114. Otherwise, please bring completed forms to the first camp session. Students are not permitted to attend camps without signed forms.
