No prior musical experience is necessary as students immerse themselves in learning techniques from the industry expert, utilizing GarageBand (for Mac) to craft original soundtracks for video clips. Beyond the fundamentals, participants will explore exciting topics like video game music, music production, and insights into the film music industry. This camp is a unique opportunity to unleash creativity, connect with peers, and delve into the magic of storytelling through the mesmerizing realm of film music. Charlie McCarron has composed for numerous award-winning films and series, including Emmy-nominated Beneath the Ink, STARZ documentary Silicone Soul, the prestigious Alfred I. duPont-Columbia award-winning documentary Love Them First: Lessons from Lucy Laney Elementary by KARE 11, and Incompleteness, which was named “Best Series” in over 30 festivals.
Charlie also writes folk songs, video game scores, and orchestral music. To open their 2021 season, the Minnesota Opera commissioned Charlie to compose Chim Lạc (Lost Bird) with writer and puppeteer Oanh Vu. In 2020, he Kickstarted the album 2020, featuring 20 Minnesota musicians recording from home during the pandemic. In 2018, Charlie was selected as a finalist in the Banaue International Music Composition Competition for his orchestral piece Balitúk: The Divided Child, traveling to the Philippines for a three-week immersion program in the mountain village of Banaue.
Charlie is the executive director of Film Score Fest, which has premiered over 100 new films with live scoring by an orchestra. For his podcast Composer Quest, Charlie crowdfunded a 2-month tour throughout the US, Australia, Taiwan, and Japan, interviewing and writing music with composers there. When he’s not making music, Charlie is usually drawing, editing videos, or creating board games in Minneapolis.
Camp Registration Guidelines & Cancellation Policy
- Space is assigned on a first-come basis. Registrations must include payment in full. Registrations are accepted after registration deadlines if space is available.
- If minimum enrollment has not been reached by 7 days prior to the start date of a camp, FilmNorth may cancel it, in which case registrants will immediately be notified and receive a full refund within 5 business days. A check will be issued for registrations that were paid by cash. In lieu of a refund, students have the option of applying their tuition to another camp if scheduled in the same calendar year.
- For those wishing to cancel a registration at least 7 days prior to the first camp session, 100% of the tuition will be refunded minus a $25 administrative fee. For registration cancellations received less than 7 days prior to the first camp session, 50% of the tuition will be refunded minus a $25 administrative fee. As of a camp start date, no refunds or credits/exchanges will be given.
- Tuition is not prorated for missed camp sessions.
- The FILMNORTH CAMP PARENT/GUARDIAN RELEASE FORM and FILMNORTH CAMP APPEARANCE RELEASE FORM must be completed and submitted prior to the start of the first camp session. A new set of forms must be completed for each camp. Please print, complete and return the two PDF forms below by: 1) emailing them to the Director of Engagement and Advancement; or 2) mailing them via regular postal delivery to Youth Camps, c/o FilmNorth, 550 Vandalia Street #120, Saint Paul, MN 55114. Otherwise, please bring completed forms to the first camp session. Students are not permitted to attend camps without signed forms.
