Announcing the 2022 McKnight Media Artist Fellows

FilmNorth is pleased to announce the four Minnesota artists selected to receive the 2022 McKnight Fellowships for Media Artists. This year’s fellows are Melissa Brandt of Rochester, Tahiel Jimenez Medina of Minneapolis, Tom Schroeder of St. Paul, and Kang Vang of North St. Paul.

Out of a field of 59 applicants, the four fellows were chosen by a national panel of media artists, writers, and curators: Dessane Lopez Cassell, a New York-based editor/writer/curator; producer/educator Neyda Martinez of New York, NY; screenwriter/director/educator David Miranda Hardy of Middlebury VT; and producer/director/arts administrator Sapana Sakya of Berkley, CA.

“It’s an annual thrill to see how the work of Minnesota media artists impresses our national panel,” said FilmNorth Executive Director Andrew Peterson. “Melissa, Tahiel, Tom, and Kang create outstanding, personal works that showcase their unique talents and points of view.  Congratulations to these four artists—and McKnight Fellows across all disciplines!”

FilmNorth Announces New Leadership on the Board of Directors

January 6th, 2022

FilmNorth’s Board of Directors has elected Saint Paul Neighborhood Network’s Bianca Rhodes as the organization’s new Board President at their December board meeting. Rhodes will serve a one-year term at the helm of the region’s largest filmmaker service organization.

“Bianca has been an extremely dedicated and thoughtful member of the Board for many years,” said FilmNorth Executive Director Andrew Peterson. “Her work at SPNN and within the community makes her uniquely qualified to lead the Board as FilmNorth continues its work at the forefront of media arts education and support in the US.”

Rhodes steps into the position most recently held by Bethany Whitehead, who is stepping off of the board at the end of her term.

Joining Rhodes on FilmNorth’s Executive Committee are Kellan Anderson Lee, Business Affairs for Target Creative, and filmmaker and TWEAK Digital founder Jeremy Wilker, who will serve as Co-Vice Presidents; Sam Burnham of Adbo, Eick & Meyers LLP, as Treasurer; and City Lights Media founder Warren Harmon, as Secretary.

In addition, Alison Guessou, Rebecca McDonald, Sherry Meek, Jamie Schumacher, and Quinn Villagomez AKA Shimmer were unanimously voted onto the Board of Directors for two year terms, starting January 2022.

“This dynamic group of leaders offers a wealth of knowledge, experience and demonstrated leadership in the region,” Peterson said. “We look forward to the contributions each of them will make in helping to guide FilmNorth as work together to advance FilmNorth’s strategic goals and implement our new Theory of Change.”
